What is Psychotherapy??
It can be stressful, maybe even intimidating to look for a psychotherapist! After all, opening up your private world to another is an act of trust. Here are some clues as to what psychotherapy with me looks like. Hopefully this can give you a better idea of what to expect. Psychotherapy is a tremendous investment of time, energy, and money, so let me help you determine whether I am a good fit for your needs.
Therapy starts with an introductory period where you will have the opportunity to share what is bothering you. During this phase, I am very active in asking you about your present and past experiences to better understand your life. After this period, we will begin to work on your present goals integrating your history, at a pace you feel comfortable with. This stage also involves you becoming more aware of your thoughts and feelings about yourself and others. I will then help you confront whatever personal stuck points there are in your life, again at a pace that is comfortable for you. Further I strive to encourage you to take responsibility for what is yours while seeking freedom from what is not. As you can imagine, each person's process is individual, and therefore the therapeutic journey is not set in stone. Rather it is a unique professional relationship of intimacy, trust, honesty, and support. Individuals typically meet once a week at a set time.
Many feel alone in their problems, but hard circumstances unearth universal experiences like isolation, grief, or anxiety. Life naturally brings certain challenges during different phases. For example, parents are faced with boundary setting, young adults are faced with identity questions, and couples are faced with commitment questions. Group therapy provides an opportunity to bond with others who share similar difficulties and goals. It also provides the opportunity to enhance interpersonal skills. Panic groups provide a strong component of Psychoeducation. Groups meet once a week for a designated period of time.

Relationships are hard work! Most, if not all couples, go through periods of difficulty. You may not even like your partner sometimes. Couples therapy focuses on repairing broken bonds, increasing intimacy and respect for one another, as well as enhancing the boundaries in a relationship. Usually teaching better communication skills provides a concrete way to facilitate greater understanding for one another. However, if you communicate just fine, we'll focus on what you do need. Sometimes, external strains such as finances, career, children, and societal discrimination, can pose a serious threat to a couple's well-being. Differences such as culture, age, background, trauma histories, can also be explored to help couples better understand one another and communicate more effectively. Couples typically meet once a week for 50 or 90 minutes.
Sometimes the whole family is involved or stressed by a situation. Children and parents need a safe place to explore options for moving forward. Family therapy focuses on supporting the entire family in making adjustments to strengthen unity, love, flexibility, and respect for all members. Family therapy is especially helpful if you have young children, or adolescents that are having difficulty adjusting to school or a divorce. Family therapy is also helpful when a member of the family has made a decision that the rest of the family is having a hard time understanding. If your family culture is elder oriented or has cross cultural issues, family therapy can also be a safe place to explore these issues.
