Romantic relationships can be hard work to maintain, especially over the long term through difficult phases of change and crisis. Most, if not all couples, go through periods of real difficulty that can create opportunities for growth or threaten collapse. Couples therapy focuses on repairing broken bonds, increasing intimacy and respect for one another, as well as enhancing the boundaries in a relationship. Usually teaching better communication skills provides a concrete way to facilitate greater understanding for one another. Sometimes, external strains such as finances, career, children, and societal discrimination, can pose a serious threat to a couple's well-being. Differences such as culture, age, background, trauma histories, can also be explored to help couples better understand one another and communicate more effectively about needs. Couples typically meet once a week for 50 or 90 minutes.
